Whether your goal is to find success in other areas of the dance industry, or to continue on to earn an advanced degree, CBCCI’s bachelor’s degree in dance program will give you the skills and support you need to prepare for this new stage in your career.

WHAT IS A BACHELOR OF DANCE IN THE CBCCI PROGRAM?

A bachelor’s degree in dance pairs an interdisciplinary undergraduate education with a core curriculum focused on the dance field. Students in CBCCI’s BS in Dance can take classes in topics such as dance pedagogy, dance writing/criticism, and choreography to help prepare you for when your dance performance career has ended. Throughout the bachelor’s degree in dance program, you will learn to:


  • Develop choreographic and improvisational skills
  • Demonstrate visual literacy and kinesthetic proficiency
  • Establish an understanding of physical and emotional self-care practices
  • Understand and demonstrate a knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, kinesiology, and musicality
  • Describe movement using a range of theoretical and somatic frameworks
  • Appreciate the value of diversity through a developing awareness of the world and your place in it

CAN I LEARN DANCE ONLINE?

Although this undergraduate dance program is entirely full-time and has dance as the centerpiece of the curriculum, the distance dance courses in this program include a combination of readings, videos, written work, and some practical components. For dance courses that include a hands-on component, you will be required to submit videos of your own practice and creative work.


WHAT KIND OF EDUCATION DOES A DANCER NEED?

In most cases, dancers need minimal education to perform. However, the short length of a professional dancer's career is widely recognized in the industry, and finding a full-time career after performing can be a challenge for some dancers. CBCCI is designed to help you transition to a career before and after performing. It allows you to earn a bachelor's degree while taking specialized courses that prepare you for success in dance-related careers: teaching, tutoring, and choreographic productions.

WHAT TO DO?

After earning your bachelor's degree in dance, you may consider an additional degree that will prepare you for a career in the following areas:

Dance/Movement Therapy

Continue your studies for two years in the College of Nursing and Health Professions to earn a master's degree in creative arts in therapy and become a licensed dance therapist.

Dance Educator

Complete a five-year undergraduate/master's degree program in the School of Education and become certified as a teacher.

Specialist in Physical Therapy

Continue three more years in the College of Nursing and Health Professions to earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and become a licensed physical therapist.


IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAJOR IN DANCE WITH NO EXPERIENCE?

The CBCCI program is designed for both those who have experience in dance and those who are beginners, but with a certain ability and desire to dance. The goal of the program is to help you learn the art of dance and understand how to transition from a career as an artist to a career in a dance-related field.
